Tequela Willoughby has been a dedicated team member since 2016. She began her career as a Lead Direct Support Technician, a role she held for two years, before advancing to the position of CAI Case Coordinator for two and a half years. After leaving Hope Haven for two years to gain additional experience as a Support Coordinator, Tequela returned with an even deeper commitment to the work and the individuals she serves.
Prior to joining Hope Haven, Tequela earned an Associate’s degree in Paralegal Studies and later obtained her Bachelor’s degree in Sociology from Albany State University. She is also a proud mother of two sons and a grandmother to two grandsons.
One of Tequela’s most memorable experiences with Hope Haven began before she fully understood the impact of the organization’s work. Living nearby at the time, she had always expressed a desire to work at Hope Haven, though she didn’t recall applying. When she received a call for an interview and was hired as a Lead Direct Support Technician, she had no idea how transformative the experience would be.
Tequela often shared with her mother that she needed to develop more patience, especially while raising two boys. Through her work at Hope Haven, she found that growth. One individual challenged her patience daily for nine months, but over time, a strong bond formed. That individual now affectionately calls her “Mama Tequela,” a title Tequela feels she truly earned—symbolizing the patience, perseverance, and compassion she developed through her work.
